Wildflowers

Observing the wildflowers around my family's cabin has been a tradition for generations. The cabin is located on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park and is at an elevation of 8,500 feet. Here dense wildflower meadows are not as abundant as in higher alpine areas. The soil is shallow and sandy and the flowers are more prone to drought. On years when the summer rains are plentiful and consistent the flowers reach their maximum abundance. Some places have no flowers at all on dry years but are quite colorful on wet years. Here I learned to appreciate flowers in their singularity--often there was only one or a few flowers to look at in a particular area. Most wildflower photography I see is of large patches or fields of them with a cragy backdrop. I learned to appreciate flowers by bending over to examine each one. This past summer was a good one for flowers around Happy Thought. I hope you enjoy them!
